Hi bill.mac1 and welcome.

If you look in Device Manager, are there any warnings against the DVD/CD-ROM drive?

If yes, please let us know the Error Code.

Anyone from SONY out there ?

If you read the 'Welcome' statement, you will see that this is a forum for Users of Sony products to offer advice and help to each other.  It is not Vaio Support and you will not get a reply from Sony here.

If you want to speak to Vaio Support you will need to telephone the premium rate number 09050310006 as your Vaio is no longer covered by warranty.  I am not sure they will offer a simple solution or not.

If there are no errors in Device Manager, there are two common reasons for the optical drive to stop working.  The first is a software conflict and the second, more common reason, is a hardware problem.

All you can do for a software problem is to reset the Vaio back to factory settings to eliminate software loaded since then causing the problem.

If it is a hardware problem then it is likely that the drive will need to be replaced.
