I have had the same problems with my Z2 was told by support to repair software which worked for a couple of weeks now the problem is back, didn't want to go through the hassle of repairing software again so tried disabling the smart backlight and turning off auto screen rotate and this seems to have cured it for now.I have a ultimate screen protector (tempered glass) on the phone but the proximity sensor doesn't seem to be affect by it as the problem was solved by software repair and if I run the diagnostics the sensor works fine.
