How to turn the darn thing off???

I have the Sony pocket edition PRS 350 and cannot find out how to turn it off! I know you have to slide the button across but that leaves it with a picture on the screen which HAS to drain the battery. Does anybody know how to turn it off completely please?

Hi,

Just to reassure you, the displayed picture itself does not drain the battery (the way e-ink screens work is that it only uses a bit of battery power when it changes the image such as when you turn the page for example).

However you can if you wish alter what appears on the screen when you slide the button across to put the Reader in sleep mode. If you touch 'Settings' on the Home screen and then select 'System Management', you will find the settings for 'Standby Screen' where you can if you wish turn all of the display images off when the Reader is in Sleep (Standby) mode. This is just a preference thing though, and will make no difference to battery consumption.

All that said, when you quickly slide the switch across as you describe, the unit is in 'Sleep' mode rather than completely switched off. So if you do want to turn the unit off completely to conserve the battery for extended periods of time you need to 'Shutdown' the device.

You can do this in either of two ways:

1) From the home screen, select 'Settings' and then touch 'Device Shutdown' (the reader will ask you to confirm (yes/no) if you want to completely power off), or

2) In any screen you can simply slide and hold (for about 3 seconds) the power switch - this will take you directly to the 'are you sure you want to completely power off the device' screen where you just touch 'Yes'.

Only thing to be aware of is that when you wake the unit from sleep mode, it springs to life instantly, whereas if you have completely powered off, when you next switch on the unit it has to re-start (a bit like a computer re-booting after shutdown), and takes about 30 seconds.
