WindowsUpdate slows down startup/shutdown

Since installing the April updates from Microsoft Windowsupdate the startup and shutdown of my fx604 has quadroupled! Occasionally the machine freezes as well. I've checked for spyware etc.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with the latest updates:

I didn't bother with
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2005 (KB890830)
as I have enough anti spyware software as it is

Indeed - but it's there, and then it's gone, so it's not a big deal
Something else is causing a problem.....
