after many enquiries with various sony people to no avail, could anyone tell me if there is a second battery or extended life battery available for pcg-grt786m

I don't know that model in detail, but if you can take the optical drive out then you can probably put a second battery in the bay. I can in my GRX.

I think there's an extended battery for that model, you would have to have a look through Sony Style.
