Dear XL Community,

I have just come across a pair of G Skill PC2-6400 DDR 2 1 GB Memory. My question is this has any one upgraded there 201 system with memory and if so which did they find to be the best option: -

1) Just install the 2GB of memory in the existing slots making a total of 2Gig of RAM
2) Install the 2 new modules of RAM into the 2 empty slots giving a total of 3 Gig of RAM.

If I do the latter which slots would you recommend using for the 4 modules of memory?

Illingworth22

I'm not sure that ram is compatible with the XL201. I've just upgraded the ram in my XL201 and was told it only takes 5300 or 5400 series ram not 6400.

Sony recommend DDR2 667mHz PC2-5300 but PC2-6400 may work as DDR2 is usually backward compatible as long as you don't mix EEC and NON-EEC memory. However, it will only work at the speed of the existing modules and will be limited by the motherboard.

Sony recommend up to 3072MB and, although I don't think the memory is paired, I would stick to identical modules in slots 1&3 and in 2&4.

Try the system scanner at CRUCIAL.COM

I've just bought 2 x 512Mb DDR2 667 corsair valueRAM. installed, worked ok, system showed 2Gb RAM (previously 1Gb). Overnight Vaio started beeping constantly, woke me, message on screen said something about being brought out of hibernation by USB, white type on black background. (although actual message may be quite different; i was barely awake)
My questions are:
is it caused by using "ValueRam"?
Anyone had similar experience?

Otherwise very impressed with my VGX-XL201

Completely forgot to say that vaio would not boot with new RAM afterwards, only way to boot was by removing new RAM

We have had isolated problems with Corsair RAM in the past.

We always recommend Crucial here because they guarantee compatibility.
