Side sense works for me 95% of the time. I just don't think you guys who are having problems are tapping the side at the right angle and/or speed.
Fingerprint sensor (FPS) - works for me 95% of the time and I have chapped up fingers. Y'all must have sweaty **bleep** fingers or some other defect.
GUI and use - super happy, fast one-hand mode is neat. Split 21:9 mode is cool and I can see myself using it for certain multi-tasking situations.
Camera - mostly good but I'm no expert and came from a Motor Z Force circa 2016. I did notice a buggy situation when saving images. It happened to me a few times where the mini preview shot in the bottom right would show the "still working" circle over the image but when you went to click on the image, it would lock up the camera. I would have to close out the app and log back in. Switching between the three different cameras is very fast, no issues for me here.
Screen - gorgeous, no issues with not being able to view in bright areas. I have adaptive brightness kept on.
Form factor - sexy, especially in Purple and the slim frame is gorgeous. Y'all is trippin' who says it's too tall. Y'all complain too much for real.
Quick, dirty, and amateur review but all-in-all I'm very happy with this purchase, especially since I got the sexy purple body and the Sony wireless headphones tossed in during the pre-order bonus. Never used any of the other flagships so I have nothing to compare to. Looking forward to more firmware updates to polish out the phone even further.
Oh yeah, I'm mostly happy with the Olixar tempered glass screen protector I purchased on Amazon. It wasn't cheap at $21.99 but the quality and fit are very nice. Even though the SP has dot matrix pattern throughout I still do get a bit of the rainbow effect in the middle. It's about a few inches long and roughly 1/2" wide but it's virtually unnoticeable during regular use even with screen off. Would I buy it again? YES.

#Side Sense works perfectly for me, no issues
Finger print sensor now works 99.99% of the time and I agree, no issues here. Around 80% before update.
GUI extremely super fast and no issues here (dont know what you are all complaining about)
Camera in still mode is fantastic - though there is no 21:9 mode, those who as a habit takes photos only in auto mode do not deserve the wonder that is a sony phone. Manual is the way to go baby!
PHOTOS are processed in ONE SECOND! (four before update)
No more crashes in camnera mode after update (no idea what you are all complaining about)
Camera in video is brilliant, colours are spot on though HDR is a bit weak
.AS MY TESTS have unarguably PROVEN
/t5/Xperia-1/Latest-July-firmware-patch-Stability-testing-MAJOR-UPDATE-1080p/m-p/1382613#M2248
There are two main issues, 1080P in NORMAL application works fine, 1080P WITH HDR ON is unstable
4K with NORMAL APP AND Cinema PRO its fantastic but if you walk with it, its unstable
(I dont think anyone can argue with my tests)
Does not work
(Therefore OIS is NOT working in anything other than normal 1080 (without HDR)
Screen brightness is no issue, even in direct sunlight, tested it myself and I KNOW WHY people are going wrong, in SONY PHONES OF THE PAST, we used to turn off adaptive brightness in order to get MAXIMUM brightness when we need it, for some reason SONY has switched it around (possibly to prolong the silly-small 3300MAPH batterry) and adavaptive brightness must be set to on when outside in direct sunlight.
Form factor I ALSO love it and to be honest though who hate it are esentially behaving like 'Luddites' its great for web browsing , film watching and general use. Going back to even a XZ3 just feels cramped.
Weak and pathetic HDR
battery is a bit small
STABILITY in 4k mode has NOT improved at all since the XZ3 and Ihave both.
Here are my tests to prove it

Looking at these results, one could be forgiven that Sony have fibbed to us and the Xperia 1 has no OIS at all!
However let us be patient until the next update, as at least we have been patient and given them 'a fair shot at the bat.'
In my view, Sony need a rehaul from the ground up, employ front-line techincal support who are REALY sony fans and have at least an inkling on how to support us end users, instead of reading from a script.
Sony technical higher ups , (second line support and above) must come from a solid techincal back ground AND have a PROJECT mangement qualification and possibly a degree of some sort.
Beta testing needs to be more thorough and there must be a culture of being able to find faults and give constructive feeback on mistakes and things that can be improved, without fear of the Japanese bosses taking offence.
On another note:
Sony should NOT send out REVIEW samples to Tech hardware sites, that REPEATEDLY SHOW unfair bias against SONY phones, as no matter what they do they will never give Sony a fair shot at the bat.
This encludes:
Endgadget is bias against ANYTHING that is not an apple phone and SONY espeically (Their own wikipedia site states this)
The Verge
Toms Hardware
and so on.
These sites will always be bias against Sony and as such sending products to them for review is a waste of money.

Oh yeah, I have a temporary slimline case right now in a grippy matte finish which looks very sleek but I am eagerly waiting the arrival of the official SONY SCTI30 screen protector to arrive. In purple of course! It wasn't cheap, at about $46.50 shipped but it's official OEM and looks very nice. We'll see how I like the frosted front folding cover though.
