Mute like symbol contantly showing on top left of screen

I have a Sony bravia kdl 40ex503 and once or twice a mute like symbol has appeared in the top left corner. However, this now remains constantly on the screen. I have tried pressing the mute button both on the TV remote and the Virgin remote control but this just mutes the television and puts a mute symbol on the screen at the bottom left of the screen.

Exactly the same problem here, but a slightly different model - it started yesterday.   I also have Virgin so wondering if it is actually a Virgin thing, rather than a TV issue?

Mine has now disappeared after trying the red button to select the Olympics choices.

Edited to add:  after checking Virgin support forums, its definitely a Virgin thing and not a TV issue.
