CD/DVD drive not working

I have a sony VA10 and the dvd drive has stopped working. I can hear it wirring for a short while but that is all. This seems to have ocurred after I was trying to connect my old ipod onto the laptop. I (probably foolishly) inserted the ipod CD rom thinking this would correct the problem I was having in connecting the ipod to itunes. Since then I have been unable to play cd's and dvd's. The only DVD drive showing on the device manager is Mat****a DVD RAM UJ8CO dated 2006, and appears to be up to date! Any suggstions?
