CPU usage

I sometimes notice that the fan of my RZ424 is going like the clappers for no apparent reason, ie. all I'm doing is browsing the net or something. I've just cheked the CPU usage diagram on Windows Task Manager and I saw that it was around 55%, sometimes "spiking" at 72%!!!

I didn't do anything and after about 5 minutes the fan calmed down and I noticed that CPU usage had dropped to about 5% (as expected sice the only applications running were the Sony Drag & Drop stuff that launches each time I fire up the PC).

Anyone got any ideas as to why the PC was working its n***s off for a few minutes?

Cheers...

Are you using Java or Flash during browsing?
I find the VAIO uses a lot of cycles running Flash and Java.

Also download Spy bot search and destroy, and adaware. you can find these by searching on google. they both look for spyware software that runs unnoticed on your computer. The programs will remove the spyware from your computer.

Another program to get is windows startup inspector to find out what programs run on startup.

Could be an OS program running in the back ground - was the HDD in overdrive too?

Not sure what they're called, but every so often my HDD goes into 'turbo mode'. Checked TaskManager and something called "Sweepserv.exe" is doing something

That would certainly do it. As DT mentioned, as well as looking at the CPU stats look ni the processes tab to see what process is hogging the CPU time (and memory). If you don't know what it is, do a search on the net for it.
