I have an all-in-one desktop VGC-LV1S running Vista.
When I use the built-in microphone, anything I say is drowned out by constant and very loud white noise.
The problem does not occur when I use a head-set, using the microphone jack.
I have checked "recording devices" and the microphone is enabled and set as the default.
I have applied all outstanding updates using the VIAO updater.
My wife has a later model running Windows 7 and has exactly the same problem.

i had the same issue with my brand new sony, essentially its poor build quality..
after some weak advice and spending extra on audio equipment, i found it was a faulty a/c adapter and the power pack... i got the same noise when trying to use it with a pre amp...but one day whilst connected.. i accidentlt stood on he power supply and the noise went !! so no thanks to sony yet another issue with this vaio
try recording with just the battery( i cant..the battery supplied never worked for more than an hour....!! try a gentle knocking of the power supply ..i hope it works for you.. best solution would be to take it back and get a cheaper dell or hewlett packard..less money better quality... less issues all round
best
