Hello,
I got my VGN-FS115E a month ago to the day. Yesterday when i tried to play a DVD, the movie playback was stuttered, as was the sound. The speakers also sounded scratchy, like my stereo speakers sound if the volume is too high.
It seems since then that all sound has the scratchy and stuttery effect. I have checked that all drivers are working - they are. I have changed the volume settings and it doesn't matter what level they are at, the same scratchy sound and stuttering occurs. The stuttering is especially noticeable playing one of my music tracks (not downloaded) that used to play fine.
I've noticed that if I am doing something else whilst the music track is playing, the scratchy sound gets worse as I move the mouse for the other application (whatever the application) - this also occurs if I move the mouse across the screen and not click on anything.
Start-up also has become incredibly slow... it now takes approx 10 - 15 minutes for the Windows XP bar to complete its event (don't know what its called, but its the blue bar made of 3 sections that travels across the windows box on start-up), prior to the rest of the start-up commencing. This is much slower than when I first had the laptop.
I have tried working through the troubleshooters, faqs etc, and even checked whether the sound problems occur through headphones, which they do. (Therefore the troubleshooter's tell me it isn't the speakers with the problem.)
I can't believe that I will have to undertake a system restore after having the laptop for only one month... does anyone else have any suggestions that might help me solve the problem?
My concern is that there is something seriously wrong with the hardware (one of the troubleshooters mentioned a possible issue with the BIOS, and EC controllers.. unfortunately that sort of speak is beyond my IT knowledge so I can only presume it means my sparkly new laptop is stuffed...!!!?)
Any help or advice greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.
...oh and I forgot to say that when the modem is run, the scratchy distorted sound from the speakers occurs as well...
Hi the scratchy sound is in fact distortion from what I understand here.
Has it always been like this? Has DVD playback always been poor? What programs do you use to watch DVD and play music?
I would do the system restore - hopefully it'll iron some of the bugs out.
Yes, distortion is a much better way of describing it. Music tracks now sound like a techno-version from some dance club somewhere....
DVD playback soundwise was fine when I first had laptop. I thought the quality of the graphics wasn't that great for the DVD mind you, but put that down to it being an old dvd and maybe too high an expectation (it looked a bit grainy, but the desktop and applications graphics were, and are, crisp and really clear)...
It's not just music tracks played off the hard drive or dvd movies that have the distortion... even the windows startup and shutdown 'jingles' are distorted, and the modem sound too.
Will try a restore back to before I installed other applications & see what that does....
Wow thats pretty messed up, I wonder if it's a defect on the sound chip?
As it's happening to all sounds.....
Nothing worse than distortion when it's not pre recorded!
Try a system restore, Sony will definately ask for this before you send it back to them....
Hi Kee-Lo,
Thanks for your replies!
I'm really very pleased  to report that after a DirectX test / check and then a system restore to the last point before i knew the problems started, the distortion of sounds and dvd playback AND the slow startup issues have disappeared (for now!)...
So am hoping that the issue was caused by some error from the old dvd I tried playing - it must have jammed something, but I haven't a clue what ,as nothing seemed to show up with task manager. Never fear, I won't be trying that dvd again!
Am hoping the error won't happen again...!
Glad to hear it's OK
