why does my laptop take a long time to shut down

Usually because a process or program is open and waiting for an input and will not easily shut down.

How long has it been doing this?

What Operating System are you using?

What Security/AntiVirus are you using?

Try looking in Event Viewer to see if there is a system error listed.

Try a Registry cleaner to remove any old redundant Registry Keys.

Check in Device Manager for any Yellow ! Warning icons showing a device driver is not installed correctly.
