VGN-AR51SU Corrupted display

Just recently, my screen has started displaying a grey block, from edge to edge, in the bottom third of the screen. The top two thirds are perfectly normal. The block first appears as solid grey, then slowly starts to fill with verical lines that match the lines of icons and programme boxes (I've attached a diagram to help in the description). The grey box appears immediately at powerup, and remains in view at all times. If I do a screen shot, the box isn't there, and if I plug my laptop into my HDMI TV, the picture is perfect. Likewise, if I access the computer remotely using UltraVNC, the reproduced screen on the remote computer is also perfect. I therefore assume that the graphics chip is working perfectly, and there is something wrong with the display hardware or drivers. Can anyone help with any suggestions? the computer is just out of warrenty, and I don't mind doing some disassembly, as I work with computers. Any help is appreciated.

Hi zodski,

try booting into safe mode do you still have the same problem.?

If yes then your problem is probably hardware related, possibly the screen cable could be causing the fault.. :slight_frown:

I suggest you either contact Sony Vaio support, you can do this either by phone or via e-Support, use the following link to find the contact details: Sony Vaio Support

Or

See if a local repairer in your area can give you an quote for repair..

Thanks for that. I've tried Safe Mode, and nothing changes, and so I am now looking at repairs via Sony. :slight_frown:
