wireless connection no longer working

Sony vaio has been working via wireless connection fine for months.  Now although the switch is still in the on position the wifi light is not illuminated and when I search for networks none can be found.  PC states wireless is not on.  How can I fix this

Is the software switch turned on? This will either be in the Wireless Switch Setting Utility or in Vaio Smart Network.  This depends on which model you have - if you need further help, please give us your Vaio model.
