I can get NFC transfer to work in only one direction. (Using 2 Z1s.)

I'm not sure what you mean, could you please elaborate? Are you only able to transfer data from on Xperia Z1 to another one with NFC and not vice versa? Or are you trying to use the NFC function to another model/NFC device?

As you say, I can transfer from phone A to phone B but not phone B to phone A. Both are Z1s.
