Regarding your question go to settings >Device Connection >USB Connectivity >install software.

Nothing happens, the computer beeps and that's it

If it makes a sound than the connection is detected, have you tried all the tips in message 8 link?

Does the phone gets charged when connected to the PC?

Have you tried connect it to another PC?
