SLT-A65V Translucent Mirror

Hi,

Is it possible to purchase one of these in the UK?  I attempted to remove a mark on the  mirror but only suceeded in trashing it altogether!  I have, since then tried to get someone to repair it for me but shelved that idea when they tried to charge £134 for the job. Later I saw the video on You Tube which demonstarted removal of the old and the fitting of the new - this prompted me to practice with the damaged one - finding that, with care, it should be easy to fit a new one.  I have been told (but don't beleive it) that the canera would need focussing after fitting - something called "electronic perception" - that sounds like claptrap to me.

Anyone know an address here in the UK where a new mirror can be bought please?

I was going to replace this mirror myself - on checking the canera prior to purchasing the mirror I found that the SD Card could not be refitted after removing it  - it would not  lock in place,  I decided to dig further into the Sony site and was surprised to find ir very easy to arrange for the camera to be posted to a Sevrice Centre. They even gave me a pre paid label to send it.  Two weeks later and once again I am in possession of my A65. I must say what a pleasure it is to receive such a comprehensive repair  -  I have to commend Sony on a great service - and i do mean that !!!

Hello chas49 - Welcome to the Sony Forums

As opposed to finding the spare part yourself, can I just ask where you got the quote for a repair job? The only reason that I ask is because if you were quoted this price from a main Sony repair centre, it may be possible to get a better price by shopping around with some local businesses that could offer the same service and there are also some companies online who will repair cameras via courier. It may be worth looking into this first of all i order to save the hassle/worry of fixing it yourself.

Thanks,

Simon

Thanks for your answer Simon.  I had two quotes, the first as stated in my first post - the other £60, The second was more reasonable and I would have gone for it if the person making the quote had not tried to make his quote appear to be of a greater value by adding ther terms 'Pre Focus' and, when this was queried added the term 'electronic perception' .  I'm pretty sure that you will agree with me in not accepring  this person's offer.

I am an octogenarian  and being that age is a constant challenge - you like to think that you can still 'cut it' - fitting this mirror successfully is such a challenge - hence the request. Having seen the video on You Tube I practiced with the old mirror and was wearing surgical gloves - I have no fear or anxiety about fitting this mirror if and when I manage to get one.

Having used cameras for many (too many 🙂 )years I am used to focussing manually - this camera , without the mirror,  allows you to do this and the pictures are excellent. But, should I wish to sell or exchange it then obviously it's value would be substantially reduced.

Hello again chas49 - Thanks for your reply

As long as you are happy to perform the repair yourself and are aware of the risk of damaging other parts of the camera in the process (albeit accidentally) I will ask a few contacts of mine where they think it is possible to obtain a replacement mirror - if indeed this is possible.

Once I have some further information for you, I will let you know on here.

Thanks,

Simon

Thank you Simon, much appreciated. :smileyhappy:Yes, I feel sure that I can replace the old mirror - on the face of it it's easy.  I would also appreciate your views on the expressions 'Pre-Focus' and 'Electronic Perception' made to me via a repairer's email (Not Sony!) - these appear to me to be an inducement for you to use their services and bear no resemblance to the reality.  Frankly, I would rather leave the camera the way it is than be influenced by what I would call a dubious way of doing business. I'm sure that you wouild agree if, indeed, the expressions were a figment of his imagination. But. caustion is still called for - once the idea has been planted then it is difficult to ignore :slight_frown:

Once again Simon, thanks.

Hello again

I have noticed that this question has been discussed before on the Sony Forums and some links were suggested here:

http://www.sony.co.uk/discussions/message/769662#769662

There are contact details for two companies here, http://www.semenedis.com/ who are a spare parts provider and http://www.bss-online.co.uk/repairs_alpha.php who are a repairs provider. One of these companies may be able to supply the mirror part for you.

Thanks,

Simon

Simon.  I tried the Birmingham Specialist Services and was told that part no: A1855640A would cost £60 as near as dammit and labour an extra £53. Expensive! When you view the size of this thing you  wonder how such a price can be placed on it - but, I suppose that's high tech for you.  It would appear that the £60 quote was good value, ie: £134, £60 and £113.Your help was appreciated and that, I think, is the norm in these forums. Thanks Simon
