Will Kindle ebook work on Sony ereader?

No Kindle has a closed system where only Amazon books work. Reader from Sony uses the open source EPUB standard on which you can read books from any store that follow this open standard.

Probably. I say probably, because you may be able to convert it with a piece of software called Calibre.

If it isn't protected.

I certainly wouldn't pay good money to buy a book in Kindle format of the offchance.
