att data plan for "smart phone"

I have been using x10i global unlocked unbranded for months and the radio signal was always pretty slow. My data plan was set up for a legacy flip phone. The "unlimited data" for $9.95/mon is what I was using from ATT. I got a used x10a locked and branded to ATT from ebay. The first day out after moving my ATT sim chip into it, the ATT network computer automatically switched my data plan (without my permission) but holy gigabyte batman what a difference in speed! It's almost as good as the wifi connection I have at home!

I talked to ATT and a helpful minion there explained it all to me. He argued with me about my plan, as I insisted that it DID work with the x10i. He insisted that my old data plan was impossible to work with the x10a. We went around and around on that, ended up he was very interested in flashtool for his own device LOL.

I was concerned about them changing my plan and how much extra it's going to cost me every month. I understood he was able to switch me back to my old plan,  IF I were to put my sim back into a legacy device is the only way? Such shenanigans!

That old ATT sim chip was from my first Walkman phone from Sony Ericsson. The phone still works and it's got great speakers, but that old W600i didn't have an expandable memory slot. Still I love that old thing. Anyway that chip gets slid into whatever device I want, and when I put it in the ebay phone is when my data plan that I've had for years gets shot down in flames. Oh and ATT will NOT unlock that new ebay phone until August (he checked the IMEI) what's that all about ATT? (beg pardon for the rant)

I thought I was getting data throttled by ATT and I was right.

I told that kid he works for a really greedy big corporate monster apathetic about it's service. How back in the day someone would answer the 611 number even on Christmas Day or the middle of the night, and after I was finally forced into Cingular how it went downhill from there. Now Cingular is gone and it's ATT again, but it's not the good ol' ATT of yesteryear, that's for sure! I'm banned from their forums!

So I considered what I was up against and really like the faster radio signal.... but I'm thinkin' geez they robbed me without using any guns! So now I have to pay by the gigabyte. Basically it costs about ten USD each month for every gigabyte you use. Pretty darn expensive if you ask me, but I digress.

What is H? With the new plan it finally shows "3G" up by the radio icon, but sometimes instead of showing 3G it shows H. What is that? (I had an E up there with the old unlimited plan)

while you were using X10i you were stuck on 2G (E = Edge) that's why it was so slow, and another reason AT&T gave you a data plan for non-smartphones, now with the X10a you have access to 3G and 3.5G (H)

Thanks Uliwooly and Gwhispererz.

H is better.

Check.

ATT does work well here in the Los Angeles area. Nextel is the worst. Sprint works pretty good and Verizon works very good. ATT seems to have the fastest data plan, and yeah I like how it speeded me up out of "dialup". I didn't really have a grasp of the 2G thing until now.

What I always had a good grasp of is how much extra money the greedy big corporate monster ATT  can suck out of me!

I became a Sony Ericsson fan many years ago, and with their capitulation on updating the x10, their tarnished image isn't as bad as ATT.

yeah it sucks how big corporations squeeze their customers w/o improving quality service and/or more reliable service

Sony Ericsson sounds like they sucked it up in that regard however and I'm proud of them for announcing 2.3 for x10

I sure would like to be able to get back into that ATT forum. I have a couple rants for 'em LOL

sucks for the other AT&T customers that have an X10 and don't know about FlashTool
