Hi there,
On my Xperia Arc when I go on display settings there is an option to change how bright the screen is, however there is no option to make the light sensor automatically change the brightness.
Does anyone know how to set this?
I checked every possible settings and options and cant find it anywhere
When I had a Xperia X1 there was an option for this and worked really well.
Thanks!

The proximity switch worked as you said, but still the automatic light sensor is not working.

I think the ambient light its working but its not as sensitive or it doesn't change the brightness of the screen as fast as other phones

This may look like it, but when I bought the Arc the sensor were working perfectly and the response time were very fast.
Now when I'm using the phone in the dark the screen gets too bright and I have to adjust it manually.
Isn't this a bug that should be fixed by SE? Or is ir related to Android?

I think its a SE issue, I agree even if its dark the screen remains bright atleast at 80% brightness
I use the power control widget and the Quick Settings widget, I hope this issue gets addressed w/ the next update

This discussion really helped me to fix my XPERIA Arc's light sensor so I decided to give more clarity for those who need a step-by-step guide.
My phone runs Android v.2.3.3 with Sony Ericsson's build number 3.0.1.A.0.145. It is in a state of newly received device without any softwere updates.
1. There was an On/Off: Backlight widget already on the desktop in my phone. It does not switch to an automatic backlight scheme. The only possible states are Min backlight and Max backlight.
2. Another widget called Power Control I added from the widget menu. It has three states, Min, Auto and Max backlight. Auto and Max share the same icon so you won't see which state is switched on.
3. To see the difference you have to adjust the brightness in Settings -> Display -> Brightness to a lower value. Then, if you are not on the bright sun, you will see the difference in brightness.
4. In Auto mode brightness change is not fast (in my device it's approx. 1 point per second) so you may just not notce it's working. The best way to check is to put the phone in a dark place and use a flashlight.
