recovery disk not working

I have always had probs withe the dvd drive, (long story) when i put in the recovery disk, it wont autorun (it set on) so i go through explorer, and click the vru.exe but i get an error.

"run-time error '429'
activex component cant creat object

any idea what it is asking for and why? I'm looking to reformat using the recovey disk, but hesitant if it doesnt even work, and i will be really stuffed.

ActiveX is a componant of Internet Explorer, which the Recovery disk uses for its navigation. Try installing the latest version of internet explorer, or if you already have it download it from the microsoft website and choose the repair option.

thanks...i did what u said..ie was ok, the web site said about visual basic, so i instaled vb5, vb6 wouldnt instal for some reason, anyway it didnt solve the problem,

any other ideas?

Do you have Norton Internet Security running? That often gets in the way of running ActiveX apps.

Have you installed SP2? I can see that having security measures which would prevent ActiveX components from running.

no service pack 2...but i do keep it upto date with the ms update site, and on the last check, there was nothing to update, except a security issue patch for IE

I clicked on recoverey.exe and it ran, but during all the instalations of programs that had been deleted a while ago, it kept comming up with "running script error"
