Can i just ask...
I have a PCG-K215S, which has the ATI 9200 64mb graphics card.
I have tried to play FarCry on 1024x768 pixels, but kept experiencing the game locking up. Spoke to a guy in my local Computer shop and he said that FarCry was one of the most powerful games out there and i wouldn't have much luck trying to play it on a 64mb graphics card.
He mentioned i would be able to play Doom 3 though.
Can anyone help with letting me know whether i can expect to be able to play, Doom 3, Max Payne 2 and other such games with my graphics card?? If so on what type of settings? Will i have to downgrade to 800x600 pixels? How does this look when playing it? Is it any good??
Any advice would be appreciated...
800x600 really won't look a huge amount different on a smallish 15 inch screen. It will look that much better for being a vaio screen anyway to make up for it. It's really down to fiddling with your settings on any game. Start playing the game on as high detail as you'd like to have it, and if it isn't running that well, turn some of the details down or lower the resolution. I personally would change the res and keep the details but it's personal preference.
Unfortunately the graphics card is where Sony really let you down, 64mb doesn't cut it nowadays for games, so in a year or two it's really going to show your computer up. And you can't replace it. It's a big shame as the hardware in general is first rate, and for laptops as pricey as these that EMPHASISE the quality of the graphics to give you a crap grahics card is maddening. I'm in the same boat as you man, mine's 64mb. And to really stick the knife in, Sony don't update the drivers either. Or at least it's been 8 months since the last one.
*Sorry didn't mean that to become a rant lol*
damien i experienced the same issues,
run the game on 800x600
put all the settings on low
AND
download the new farcry patch
this solves your problem and the game will now run smoothly. i know it wont look great..but playing farcry in the garden while having a smoke is so cool!! so who cares about the gfx
lol hope this helps
Thanks for the updates...does anyone know about Doom3?? Should i bother getting it? Or will i be wasting my money, trying to play it on a 64mb card?
listen ive heard of alpha versions OF doom3 working on the old 7500 cards and you've got a 9200 so things are hopeful, as u will have read from the other thread, get yourself these new drivers + id advise u getting a demo of doom3 of one of those game mags..before u pay the full price for it
70% chance it will work tho
Thats good advice Nick. Doom3 should work on a 64mb card but not with too many fancy effects. If you have a decent connection download the demo off their site to test it, it'll be freer than a mag. In fact it will be free lol.
