Help - Z5 will not charge

So my lovely Z5 suddenly decided today not to charge.

If i plugged it into pc it would make a ping noise but not charge. If I plugged it into socket it would not charge.

It has now run out of charge and if ipress the power button shows the red empty battory thing on the screen but it wont charge.

i read some places about holding down power and volume up and the same time .. if i do this after about 5s it makes 3 vibration noises in quick successsion but does nothing else!

any help or ideas much appreciated!!

thanks tom

I just used a piece of kitchen cloth and cleaned the port. It works now. Just myself passing advise on.

Thanks for that brilliant bit of advice, Matme. I've been experiencing  two days of extreme stress and frustration over this issue that should never have come up in the first place. I normally don't participate in forums, but created an account here just to post this one thank-you message.

I didn't use a needle, but just blew REALLY HARD into the hole a few times, then tried plugging the charger in. SUCCESS! I managed to get it to 47% before it stopped charging again. Also, the charging took place only with the phone switched off.

I'll investigate why it isn't charging when switched on, or why it suddenly stopped at 47%, and update this post accordingly. Thanks again to all those who posted this solution. You've bought me a bit of extra time.

You should only use the original Sony charger for your phone.

I hope you have some solid statistical data to back up your statement...

Since this is in all probability my first and last post, I'm going to take this opportunity to call out morons like siavoshkc and holier-than-though imbecelic fanboys like Quester, even if gets me banned.

Here's a pro tip, losers. If you don't have a solution, stay out of the problem. All that your lecturing does is just add more noise to the discussion. I've been using an original Samsung charger for over 6 years with a variety of phones, and NEVER had a problem before this.

As for Quester's spirited fanboy defense of Sony, let me tell you something. I was a professional technology Editor for a leading website for 2 years. I've used a wide variety of phones in that time, and mostly Samsungs and Xiaomis in the 6 years thence. NEVER have I experienced the wide variety of issues that the Z5 has. From the random Wi-Fi drop problem that required a factory reset, to the abysmal battery performance in Nougat, the disgraceful lack of an upgrade path to Oreo, and now this. You might think the sun shines out of Sony's behind, but for a lot of us, this is the last Sony phone we'll ever own.

Hi.. this one worked for me. As others I tried with discharged Z5 pressing (different combinations) of the yellow pin hidden in a SIM slot + power button + volume button. Always felt three tiny vibrations, red charging icon popped up - and stayed for as long as 3 secs, And nothing.. tried different Sony original USB chargers, same result.. but when I plugged the phone into USB port in a computer (like 2 mins after my last attempt to wake it up using "ordinary" SONY charger) - computer recognised the phone, started installing the drivers for it and the red charging icon has been solidly up for the past 25 mins. afraid to do press anyhing on the phone right now. also should mention that it was completely new phone (yeah.. after so many years), kept as a spare in a sealed box. No updates to firmware were done so it has been "as it was" since it left the factory.
